This visual display showcases the process of creating a garment. The background is entirely made up of students’ patterns from Brookdale’s Apparel Construction I class, their slopes, muslin scraps, and fabric swatches. This illustrates the process of patternmaking, draping, and fabric selection. In the foreground, there is a wooden Singer sewing machine case, scissors, pins, and a seam ripper, representing the process of garment construction. Additionally, there hangs a muslin sample dress. This dress in specific was a student’s submission for their Apparel Construction I midterm, the purpose being to practice as many sewing techniques on one dress as possible. From French seams, flat felled seams, princess seams, darts, flounces, and puff sleeves, this dress perfectly encapsulates the many sewing techniques available to a seamstress. Along the waist of the dress is a measuring tape tied into a bow, making it a stylish belt for a sample dress while also showcasing the crucial measurement process of garment construction. Lastly, there are multi-colored fabric scraps along the bottom of the display case. Between trimming and altering, sewing tends to be a messy activity. The fabric scraps not only illustrate that but also compliment the colors the fabric swatches provide against an otherwise neutral color scheme.
